The basics
Why backlinks still matter
A backlink is a link from another site to this one. Search engines treat links as votes: a site many trusted sites link to is more likely to rank, and its new pages are found sooner.
Not all links are equal. One link from a respected site in the same field can be worth more than dozens from unrelated or low-quality sites. Links marked nofollow ask search engines not to pass that value, though they can still bring visitors.
Anchor text, the words of the link, tells search engines what the page is about. A natural profile is mostly brand names, plain addresses and descriptive phrases. A profile full of the same commercial phrase can look bought.
A competitor's links are one of the best places to find your own. The sites that link to several of your rivals are already willing to link in your field.
In RankTwice
How it works
- 01
Search a domain
Enter any domain. Links are counted worldwide, so there's no country to pick.
- 02
Backlinks
One link from each linking site, strongest site first: the linking page, its site's and its own authority, the anchor and the page it points to, a nofollow tag where there is one, and when the link was first and last seen.
- 03
Referring domains
Every site that links, strongest first, with its authority, how many links it sends, its spam score and when it first linked.
- 04
Anchors
The words used in links to the site, most used first, with how many links and how many sites use each. Links with no text, such as image links, are grouped together.
- 05
Then the overview and the gap
Open any linking site's own overview in a click, or run a link gap to find the sites that link to all the competitors you enter but not to your client.

Reading the screen
How to read it
- Site and page authority
- 0–100 scores for the linking site and for the linking page itself. A link from a strong page on a strong site carries the most weight.
- nofollow
- The link asks search engines not to pass authority. It can still send visitors, and every natural profile has some.
- Spam score
- 0–100: how much the linking site looks like spam. Above 50 is marked high and worth a closer look; it isn't proof the link does harm.
- First seen and last seen
- When the link was first found and when it was last confirmed. A last-seen date well in the past can mean the link has gone.
Putting it to work
What to do with it
Agencies
Review a new client's links in the first week. The strong links to protect, the spammy sites to watch and the anchors in use show where link building should start.
Freelancers and consultants
Mine competitors for outreach. The referring domains of the sites ranking above your client are a ready list of sites that link in its field.
In-house teams
Check what your PR earned. Search your own domain after a campaign to see which coverage linked to you, and whether the links are followed.
Plans and limits
Compare plans- Each page of 100 backlinks, referring domains or anchors takes 1 research lookup. The same search again in the same month is free.
- Research lookups a month: 50 on Free, 1,000 on Freelancer, 2,500 on Agency and 5,000 on Agency Pro, and 200 during the trial.
- Alerts when a client loses at least 10% of its referring domains, from the Agency plan.

Questions about backlinks
How backlinks works in RankTwice, and what each plan includes.
Where does the link data come from?
From a web-wide link index rather than a crawl of the site itself, so it finds links on other sites you'd never see from your own. A search anyone ran in the last 30 days is served from our cache, and the page shows the date its data is from.
Why does the backlinks list show one link per site?
So one site with a link in every footer doesn't fill the list. The referring domains tab shows how many links each site sends.
Should I disavow links with a high spam score?
Not on the score alone. Look at the site and the link first. Search engines ignore most low-quality links on their own, and disavowing good ones can do harm.
Do backlinks depend on the country?
No. A link counts wherever the linking site is, so a site's backlinks are the same in every country.
Can I find sites that link to competitors but not my client?
Yes. The link gap compares a site with up to 4 competitors and lists the sites that link to all of them but not to it, as outreach prospects.
