The basics

What a site health score is for

A technical audit can list hundreds of issues, and most of them don't matter much on their own. A health score sums up the crawl in one number, so you can see at a glance whether a site is in good shape and whether it's getting better or worse.

The useful scores are built from pages, not from issue counts. A missing description on every page of a 2,000-page site is one problem repeated, not 2,000 problems. Counting the share of pages with a real error or warning keeps the number in proportion to the site.

A score is a starting point, not the goal. A site can score 95 and still miss the content its buyers search for, and a fix that lifts the score a point may matter less than one broken page that used to bring in leads. Read the score with the issues and the pages they name.

The trend matters more than any single crawl. Comparing each crawl with the last shows whether fixes landed, and whether a release or a plugin update broke something.

In RankTwice

How it works

  1. 01

    The whole site is crawled

RankTwice starts at the homepage and follows the site's links and sitemap, up to the project's page cap: 10,000 pages unless you set another. Pages drawn by JavaScript are opened in a real browser, for up to 20% of the crawl.

  2. 02

Pages, the crawl and the site are checked

Each page is checked as it's read. Then the crawl as a whole is checked for problems that only show across pages, such as duplicate titles, orphan pages and broken internal links, and the site once for robots.txt, the sitemap and HTTPS. 106 checks in 8 groups.

  3. 03

    Pages become a score

A page with an error counts in full against the score, a page with only warnings about a third, and notices not at all. Each site-wide error then takes off 6 points, and each site-wide warning 2.

  4. 04

Each crawl is compared with the last

From the second crawl, the score shows its change, and two lists show the issues fixed and the issues that are new. A chart follows the score over time.

  5. 05

    On a schedule, or now

Crawls run monthly by default, or weekly if you choose, and Crawl again starts one straight away. The latest score goes into the client's monthly report.

Reading the screen

How to read it

Site health
The score out of 100 with a label: Good from 80, Needs work from 50 and Poor below that. Under it is the change since the last crawl.
Pages with errors and with warnings
How many pages have at least one error, and how many at least one warning. These two numbers drive the score, so they show where the points went.
Errors, warnings and notices
Errors (11 checks) break pages or shut search engines out: broken pages, server errors, redirect loops. Warnings (39) hold pages back, such as duplicate titles and redirect chains. Notices (56) are worth knowing and often intended, such as noindex tags or long addresses.
Site instead of a count
Some issues belong to the whole site, such as a missing sitemap or both the www and non-www versions loading. They show Site in place of a page count, and take points off directly.
Fixed and new
Checks that went from some pages to none since the last crawl are listed as fixed; checks that had no pages before and have some now are listed as new. The new list is the first place to look after a drop.

Putting it to work

What to do with it

  • Agencies

Report the score each month with the fixes behind it. A rising line and a short list of what was fixed shows clients technical work they'd otherwise never see.

  • Freelancers and consultants

Use the first crawl to scope a technical project. Errors first, then warnings on the pages that matter most, gives you a fix list you can price.

  • In-house teams

Crawl weekly around releases. A lower score and a list of new issues the day after a deploy catches a broken template before it costs rankings.

Plans and limits

Compare plans
  • Pages crawled a month, across all projects: 500 on Free, 50,000 on Freelancer, 200,000 on Agency and 300,000 on Agency Pro, and 5,000 during the trial.
  • Each project sets its own cap per crawl, from 100 pages up; 10,000 by default.
  • Monthly or weekly crawls, and crawls on demand, on every plan.

FAQ ( 6 )

Questions about health score

How health score works in RankTwice, and what each plan includes.

How is the health score calculated?

It starts from the share of pages with no error or warning. A page with an error counts in full, and a page with only warnings about a third. Each site-wide error then takes off 6 points and each site-wide warning 2. Notices don't change it.

What counts as a good score?

RankTwice calls 80 and up Good, 50 to 79 Needs work and under 50 Poor. Compare a site mostly with its own past crawls: the trend and the issues behind it say more than the label.

Why did the score drop when nothing changed?

Something usually did: a new section of pages, a template change, or more pages crawled because the site grew or the cap went up. The list of issues new since the last crawl shows which checks appeared.

Do notices lower the score?

No. Notices are things to confirm, such as pages marked noindex, and they're often intended. They're listed so you can check them, not counted against the site.

Can I compare the score with other audit tools?

Not directly. Every tool weighs issues its own way, so the same site scores differently in each. Follow one tool's score over time instead.

Do crawls I start by hand use the allowance?

Yes. Every crawl's pages count toward the month's pages, whether it ran on schedule or on demand. A smaller page cap on large sites makes the allowance go further.
