The basics
Why SERP features change what a ranking is worth
A results page is more than ten blue links. Around the organic results, Google can show an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a local pack, People also ask, videos, images, shopping results, forum threads and more. These are SERP features, and which ones appear depends on the search.
They change what a position is worth. Third place under an AI Overview, a local pack and a row of videos sits much further down the screen than third place on a page of plain results. A keyword can hold its position and still lose clicks when Google adds a feature above it.
They're also openings. A featured snippet, a place in the local pack or a citation in an AI Overview can put a client above the first organic result. Knowing which features appear on which keywords tells you where structured answers, a stronger Google Business Profile or video could pay off.
AI Overviews deserve their own watch. When one appears, it answers the question at the top of the page and links the sources it drew on. Whether your client is among those sources is a separate result from its organic position, and worth reporting on its own.

How it works
- 01
Read in the daily check
There's no separate check. The daily check that records the top 20 positions for each keyword reads the rest of the results page too, in the project's country, language and device.
- 02
Features are recognized by type
21 feature types are recognized, from AI Overviews, featured snippets and local packs to People also ask, forums, short videos and shopping results.
- 03
Each feature is checked for your client
For every feature on the page, RankTwice checks whether any part of it points to your client's domain: the source of a featured snippet, a local pack listing that links to the client's site, or a source the AI Overview cites, for example.
- 04
AI Overviews get their own column
Whether Google showed an AI Overview, and whether it cites the client's site, is recorded every day and shown next to the position.
- 05
In the monthly report
The report lists the features that appeared most across the tracked keywords, how many keywords showed each one and how many of those showed the client, from each keyword's last check of the month. Its highlights count the searches with an AI Overview and how many cite the client.

Reading the screen
How to read it
- AI Overview: Cited or Not cited
- Cited means Google showed an AI Overview that lists the client's site as a source. Not cited means one appeared without the client. A dash means none appeared in the latest check.
- Feature chips
- The SERP features column shows the first few features on each keyword's page, with a count of the rest. A filled chip shows the client's site; a gray one doesn't.
- AI Overviews in the summary
- The figure above the table counts the tracked keywords whose latest check showed an AI Overview, and how many of those cite the client.
- Keywords and showing the client
- In the report, each feature shows how many tracked keywords had it, such as 12 of 40, and how many of those showed the client. A feature on many keywords that rarely shows the client is the opening to work on.
Putting it to work
What to do with it
Agencies
Explain ranking reports with evidence. When a client's clicks fall while its positions hold, check whether an AI Overview or a local pack now sits on those keywords, and show the client.
Freelancers and consultants
Pick the work with the clearest payoff. Keywords where a featured snippet or local pack appears, and another site holds it, are where a content or profile fix can lift the client up the page.
In-house teams
Track how many of your keywords now carry an AI Overview, and how many of those cite you. It's a simple number to share with leadership as AI search changes the page.
Plans and limits

Questions about SERP features
How SERP features works in RankTwice, and what each plan includes.
Which SERP features do you track?
These 21: AI Overview, Featured snippet, Local pack, People also ask, Knowledge panel, Top stories, Videos, Short videos, Images, Shopping, Ads, Forums, Perspectives, X posts, Map, Hotels, Jobs, Events, Recipes, Carousel and Related searches.
What does “showing the client” mean?
That some part of the feature points to the client's domain. Examples are the source of a featured snippet, a local pack listing that links to the client's site, and a source the AI Overview cites.
Does the daily check catch every AI Overview?
It records an AI Overview when Google includes it in the results page the check reads. Google loads some AI Overviews after the rest of the page; the daily rank check doesn't wait for those, but the weekly AI checks on your prompts do.
How is this different from AI visibility tracking?
Rank tracking checks your keywords every day and records whether an AI Overview appears and cites the client. AI visibility asks your prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews once a week and saves the full answers.
Is the local pack here the same as the map-pack grid?
No. The local pack here is the block of map listings on the main Google results page, checked daily for the project's country or the keyword's own location. The map-pack grid searches Google Maps from points around the business, once a week.
Do SERP features cost extra?
No. They come from the same daily check as the positions, so they use no extra keywords.
